Fishing For Souls At Emmanuel UCC

Can you imagine just dropping everything, leaving everyone you know, and starting a new life just because someone tells you to follow him? Just think of the reaction of your family, your friends and your coworkers. They would probably think you went nuts. I wonder if that was the reaction when Simon and his brother, Andrew, dropped their fishing nets, left their boat and walked off the job to follow Jesus. The same thing happened a short time later when Jesus calls to James and John to leave their boat (with their amazed and possibly confused father still sitting there). No hesitation. No excuses. Just blind trust. Jesus tells them that from now on they will be “fishers of men.”

Their new job description would be to look for people to bring to God. That’s quite a tall order for ordinary fishermen. Where’s their educational background, their experience, their curriculum vitae? They weren’t trained for this new profession, but they accepted the job offer anyway. And over time, Jesus trains them and the other disciples to work for God. Jesus calls out to us also. “Follow me,” he cries. Just as those early followers brought people to believe in Jesus and the good news of his resurrection, we can reach out to those in our communities with the same good news. Jesus came for the salvation of all people. Spread the word. Fish for souls.
