“It only takes a spark to get a fire going, And soon all those around can warm up in its glowing.” This is how Pass It On begins. Written by Kurt Kaiser and Ralph Carmichael as part of their first Christian rock musical Tell It Like It Is, this contemporary hymn inspires us with imagery of how wonderful God’s love is and encourages us to share his love with others. In much the same way our faith began over two thousand years ago. On Pentecost, we celebrate the birthday of the Christian faith when Peter and the other disciples, who had been hiding out from the authorities after Jesus was crucified, received Jesus’ promised gift of the Holy Spirit. As what appeared to be flames of fire and the sound of a rushing wind encircled them, they were filled with God’s power. With amazing courage and no heed for their own safety, they took to the streets of Jerusalem, the enemy territory. Peter spoke so eloquently and convincingly to the people assembled for the Pentecost festival that over 3,000 people converted to believing in Jesus. Peter and the other disciples were on fire. They felt true excitement. When was the last time we were so excited –so on fire? What would it take for us to feel so enthusiastic about anything that we would want everyone to know about it? “I’ll shout it from the mountain top, I want my world to know: The Lord of love has come to me, I want to pass it on.”
