Movies Night is Monday, May 22nd featuring a Woman in Gold. Sixty years after fleeing Vienna, Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren), an elderly Jewish woman, attempts to reclaim family possessions that were seized by the Nazis. Among them is a famous portrait of Maria’s beloved Aunt Adele: Gustave Klimt’s “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I.” With the help of young lawyer Randy Schoeberg (Ryan Reynolds), Maria embarks upon a lengthy legal battle to recover this painting and several others, but it will not be easy, for Austria considers them national treasures.
The Woman in Gold, a remarkable 1907 gold leaf painting was not just a masterpiece, it was a portrait of Maria’s aunt Adele Bloch-Bauer, which was of priceless personal value to the family. Dame Helen, 69, says: “It was justice. The Austrian government didn’t want to give them back. Hopefully it will show people you can fight against the odds and sometimes, occasionally, brilliantly, miraculously win.” She hopes the film will help audiences remember the horrors of the Holocaust.
