Isn’t it great to dine at a fine restaurant? Or how about at a neighborhood diner? Maybe even MickeyD’sorSubway? Weall have our favorite places to eat. They have an atmosphere we enjoy and our favorite food. There’s another favorite meal for Christians. We gather together to celebrate a special dinner, introduced by Jesus as he explained his true mission to his disciples.
For their last meal together, Jesus presented them with a way to always remember him. And what a simple way. The basic meal of their day consisted of bread and wine. How could he miss? The symbols of sacrifice: bread for a broken body, wine for shed blood. His followers would be reminded of his sacrifice every time they ate together. And they would also be reminded that through his sacrifice and triumph over death, they could know the joy of eternal life.
We, too, remember his sacrifice and triumph and are glad that Jesus has made it possible for us to know his true joy as well. The table is set with the bread and cup. Come, feast at the Lord’s table.
