Josephine B. “Jo” “Josie” Nowak, 95, formerly of Mountain Top, died July 27, 2017, at the Golden Living Center “Mansion” in Sunbury.
She was born Oct. 6, 1921, in Plains Township, Luzerne County, a daughter of the late Jacob and Mary (Cichoski) Kopec. On Nov. 19, 1949, she married John A. Nowak, who preceded her in death on Jan. 6, 1991.
Josephine attended Cotton Avenue Elementary School, Hudson, and later Plains High School. She gained employment with Mary Macintosh Laundry in Wilkes-Barre and other local businesses. Mrs. Nowak was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church, Sunbury.
She was an avid walker and enjoyed traveling to Atlantic City, N. J. She also enjoyed watching television game shows, including Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.
Josephine is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Eleanor
A. and Ronald E. Knarr, of Northumberland; two grandchildren and spouses, Matthew B. and Kelly
M. Knarr, of North Potomac, Md., Lenore M. and Jason E. Hanley, of Danville; four great-granddaughters, Madeline, Gabriella, EllaMarie and Makayla, and a fifth great-granddaughter expected in October.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Mike, Leo, Theodore and Chester Kopec; and three sisters, Susan Victor, Mary Keen and Genny Simerson.
Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p. m. on Wednesday at the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, 210 King St., Northumberland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a. m. on Thursday in St. Monica Catholic Church, 109 Market St., Sunbury. A graveside service will be held at 11 a. m. on Friday in Calvary Cemetery, Drums.
