Field Hockey In District Title Game

Crestwood’s Morghan Murphy scored two goals to lead the lady Comets to a 2-1 victory over visiting Dallas (11-5) in the Wyoming Valley Conference District 2 Class 2A semifinals on October 26.

The win advanced the No. 2 seed Crestwood (11-4) to the championship game against No. 1 Valley West (14-1) which was scheduled to be played on Tuesday, October 31. The game was a rematch of last year’s district title game. Valley West is the reigning district champ.

Crestwood also secured a berth in the state playoffs.

Against Dallas, Murphy scored unassisted at 25:47 to put the Lady Comets in front 1-0 at the half. Dallas responded in the second half when Hannah Yanovich scored, assisted by Shannon Barrett, scored to tie the game. With only eight minutes left in regulation, Murphy scored her second goal to seal the win for the Lady Comets.

Goalkeeper Eryn Venesky anchored the Crestwood defense, recording four saves.

Tuesday’s game was Crestwood’s fourth consecutive district final under fourth-year head coach Patsy Moratori. In Moratori’s first three years, the Lady Comets were 2-1. Valley West entered the title game as the reigning champion.
