Wilkes University Choral Ensembles will join with the Arcadia Chorale to present Christmas Joy: Music for Chorus, Brass and Organ on Saturday, Dec. 2 and Sunday, Dec. 3. Saturday’s performance will be held at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 35 S. Franklin St.,Wilkes-Barre, at 7:30 p. m., and Sunday’s performance will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 550 Madison Ave., Scranton, at 3 p. m. Tickets are $15 general admission, $12 for seniors and WVIA members and free for students.
The program features seasonal
works by choir, brass ensemble and organ ensemble, including Daniel Pinkham’s Christmas Cantata and pieces by Andrew Carter, Herbert Howells, Giovanni Gabrieli, Tomás Luis de Victoria and Irving Berlin. There will also be arrangements of traditional Christmas carols.
Both the Wilkes University Chorus and the Wilkes University Chamber Singers will perform at the concert.
The University Chorus is the University’s largest choral ensemble, and is open to any student by audition. Recent repertoire includes Mozart’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and Brahms’ Requiem. The Chamber Singers typically perform a wide range of capella repertoire, from Renaissance to contemporary.
The Arcadia Chorale is Northeast Pennsylvania’s premier musical organization. The University Chorus will join the Arcadia Chorale again in March for a performance of J. S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion.
