Comets In District Tournament
February 12 was a big night for the Crestwood girls basketball team. On Senior Night, not only did the Lady Comets capture the Wyoming Valley Conference Division I title but Crestwood standout Julia Makowski scored her 1000 career point.
The 51-28 trouncing of Wyoming Valley West gave the Lady Comets their first league championship since 2013-14 season.
In the District 2 Class 5A District tournament, No. 2 Crestwood (15-7) was scheduled to play No. 7 North Pocono (12-10) on Wednesday, February 21 at 6 p. m. at Berwick High School. If the Lady Comets win, they will advance to play agin on February 24.
Against Valley West, Makowski was the game-high scorer with 25 points. Sara Hopkins added seven while Bella Termini tossed in four. Riley Morgan Magin tossed in three while Helena Jardine added two, and Sarah Richards added one.
Crestwood added another win in their final regular season game on February 14 when they dispatched Coughlin for a 54-30 victory.
In a balanced team scored attached, Richards led the Lady Comets with 11 points followed by Jardine with nine and Makowski, eight.
Morgan, Hopkins, and Wickiser each scored four points while Kristen Andrews, Sydney Kearney, Kaitlyn Kline and Andrea Shipton scored three points apiece. Alexis Armstrong chipped in with two points.
+++++ On the boys’ side, Crestwood
cruised past Valley West, 68-46 in a game played February 13.
Camden Boris and Mike Palmiero led the Comets offensively with 15 points each.
On February 15, Crestwood easily defeated Coughlin, 54-29.
Palmiero led the Comets with 14 points, Sean Murphy scored 12 (four three-pointers), and Ryan Petrosky added 12. Also putting points on the board were Evan Knapp with seven, Camden Boris, six, Adam Gegaris, two, and Jimmy Curry, one.
Juniors Boris and Palmiero have been named to the Wyoming Valley Conference Second-team All Stars.
No. 3 Crestwood (15-7) was scheduled to play No. 6 Pittston Area (6-16) in the quarterfinals of the District 2 Class 5A on Tuesday, February 20 at Berwick. If the Comets are successful, they will advance to the semifinals on Friday, February 23.
