Crestwood Girls Basketball Team To Play For District 2 Class 5A Title

The Crestwood girls basketball team will play for the District 2 Class 5 title next weekend after cruising past Wyoming Valley West, 60-28, in the semifinals on February 24 at Pittston Area High School.

It will be a battle of the Comets when No. 2 Crestwood (17-7) takes on No. 1 Abington Heights (17-7) in the finals on Saturday, March 3 at 6 p. m. at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Both teams will advance to the PIAA playoffs. It will only be the second time Crestwood has appeared in the state tournament, their last appearance being in 1984.

In the semifinal game, Crestwood outscored Valley West, 30-15 in the opening half. A smother defense by the Lady Comets kept their opponents back on their heels as Crestwood piled on the points in a fantastic performance.

In a balanced scoring attack, Julia Makowski was the game-high scorer with 18 points followed by Sara Hopkins who tossed in 16.

Sarah Richards and Helena Jardine each added five while Alexis Armstrong scored four points, and Bella Termini, three. Andrea Shipton, Riley Magin, Kristen Andrews, Brianna Wickiser had two points each and Jaden Weiss, one.

The girls defeated North Pocono, 40-34, in the District 2 Class 5A quarterfinals on February 21. With the win, Crestwood advanced into the semifinals

In the quarterfinals, Makowski led the Lady Comets with 145 points, followed by Hopkins with nine. Also putting points on the board for Crestwood were Jardine with five, Shipton and Sarah Richards with four points each, Termini, two, and Magin, one.


The Crestwood boys lost to Dallas, 50-52, in the District 2 Class 5A semifinal on February 23 at King’s College. It was a heartbreaking loss for the Comets after a great season.

Against Dallas, Crestwood kept it close even though they were behind by eight in the first quarter. By the end of the half, tenacious play by the Comets pulled to within two points. Crestwood moved into the lead with a strong third quarter, hitting 10 of their first 13 shots in the opening quarter but were unable to best their opponents down the stretch.

Sean Murphy and Camden Boris led the Comets in scoring with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Ryan Petrosky added nine points while Evan Knapp tossed in eight points and Mike Palmiero finished with six.

Crestwood (16-7) pulled out a 48-45 win over Pittston Area (6-17) on February 20 to advance into the Wyoming Valley Conference District 2 boys semifinals that was scheduled Friday, February 23.
