The Crestwood Girls Basketball team played for the District 2 5A championship last Saturday evening at Mohegan Sun Area Saturday but came up short against the defending champion Abington Heights, 51-45.
Despite the loss, the Lady Comets advance to the PIAA Championships to make their second-ever state tournament appearance in 34 years. Crestwood (17-8) will take on the No. 4 Susquehannock High School in the opening round of the PIAA playoffs on Saturday, March 10 at Wilkes University at 4:30 p. m.
In the district championship game, Crestwood got off to a slow start, falling behind, 9-18 in the opening quarter and 13-7 in the second. Trailing by 15 to open the second half, Crestwood started their comeback, with a strong third quarter as they pulled within seven points of their opponents. With only 1:04 remaining, the Lady Comets came within three points from tying the game. Abington responded within under a minute left in the game to hang on for the win.
Sara Hopkins led the Lady Comets in scoring with 13 points, followed by Julia Makowski and Andrea Shipton who each scored 10. Sara Richards tossed in seven while Helena Jardine chipped in five in the hard-fought contest. Lady Comets Hopkins (2) and Makowski (1) each scored three-pointers in the thriller.
