Crestwood Girls Capture District Field Hockey Title

Undefeated Crestwood (21-0) captured the Wyoming Valley Conference District 2 Class AA Field Hockey title, defeating rival Wyoming Seminary 2-0 at Spartan Stadium on October 29.

The win advances Crestwood into the opening round of the PIAA playoffs on Tuesday, November 5 against the fourth-place team from District 3. Sem (14-5-1) will take on the District 4 champion in the opening round of the state tournament.

Against Sem, senior Marissa Surdy scored early in the opening half off a pass from Elizabeth Dessoye to end take a 1-0 lead.

The Comets second goal was scored unassisted by Megan McCole at the 0:34 mark in the second half.

Crestwood’s staunch defense allowed their opponents only seven shots on goal while the lady Comets had 17 shots. Crestwood had eight corners while Sem had five.

Keeper Dallas Kendra did an outstanding job in the cage.

In the Districts semifinals on October 24, Crestwood shutout visiting Holy Redeemer, 6-0.

Surdy scored three goals in the win and advance into the Championship against Seminary.

In a balanced scoring attack, Maury Cronauer, Ashleigh Thomas, and Elizabeth Dessoye each added goals. Kendra turned away seven shots for Crestwood.

In the District quarterfinals, Crestwood blanked visiting Pittston Area, 9-0, on October 22.

Cronauer led the lady Comets with two goals in the win. Also scoring were Hannah Ackers, Dessoye, Hunter Pitman, Thomas, Surdy, Casey Cole and Samantha Geroski.
