The Crestwood Middle School Hockey team has started their defense of their 2012 Middle School Championship last season. This year’s team has three returning players and twelve new players.
The first game of the season was played Nov. 17 against Back Mountain at the Revolution Ice Centre. The game started with a hard fought first period that ended with Back Mountain on top 1-0. Charles Helmbold made some nice stops as goalie for Crestwood. In the second period, Abigail Davis scored her first Middle School goal for Crestwood. However, Crestwood had a tough time stopping the Back Mountain team and Back Mountain stayed on top after the second period, 4-1. Crestwood showed heart and determination during the third period but could not find the back of the net. Hembold stopped 17 of 23 shots on net. The final score was Back Mountain, 6 Crestwood, 1.
On Nov. 24, Crestwood looked to get back on the winning streak against the Spartans of Wyoming Valley West. After a back and forth first period, with Trent Hilbert from the Spartans scoring their first two goals and Crestwood’s returning player, Jared Weisenberger scoring the first unassisted goal, Frank Doherty scored his first Middle School goal with an assist from Kelsey Koulak. Weisenberger scored the lone unassisted goal for Crestwood in the second period and both teams fought hard with the Spartans still leading 4-3. Once again, Crestwood played with a lot of heart and determination in the third period and this time ended up on top. Third period goals came from Davis with an assist from Tyler Harris, Weisenberger with an unassisted goal, another goal from Weisenberger unassisted and a goal from David Gugliotti with an assist from Doherty, Davis with an assist from Weisenberger and an unassisted goal from Davis. Crestwood outscored the Spartans 9-6 in the fast paced game that offered a lot of back and forth action for the enthusiastic fans. Helmbold stayed strong between the pipes once again and stopped 19 of 25 shots with some nice glove work.
Crestwood’s Middle School team is coached by head coach Jeff Weisenberger, assisted by coaches Tom Harding and Frank Govan.
The next game is at Revolution Ice Centre on December 8 against Susquehanna.
