Crestwood Basketball Teams Win WVC Division I Titles

CRESTWOOD FANS cheered on their team to an exciting 67-62 win over Hazleton Area in an important WVC contest last week.

Crestwood captured the Wyoming Valley Conference Division I championship with a 64-53 win over Hazleton Area in a hard fought game played at Wilkes University on Sunday, February 16. Crestwood’s record improved to 14-1 Division I, 20-3 overall, with its first divisional title since the 2007-08 season. The title game was the rubber match between the two, with the Cougars taking game one on their home court, 60-57, on January 17 and the Comets responding with a 67-62 home win on just last week. The teams entered the tilt with identical 13-1, 19-3 records.

The Comets balanced scoring attack and outstanding defense kept the Cougars on their heels. After an even first quarter, Crestwood opened up a 7-point lead at the end of the half. Hazleton managed to stay with Crestwood in the third but it wasn’t enough to keep up with the soaring Comets/

Brady Gallager led Crestwood with 20 points. Chris Fazzini tossed in 15 while Luke Casey added 14.

Also contributing on the scoreboard were Cole Wasco with six, and Robbie Hopkins chipped in four in the victory.

In their last meeting on February 11, Crestwood defeated rival Hazleton, 67-62, before a packed hometown crowd at the Crestwood gym. Comet fans cheered their team from start to finish as Crestwood was not to be denied.

Crestwood had a solid first half, leading Hazleton, 31-23. The Cougars roared back in the third, edging the Comets by three but it wasn’t enough to upend the determined Comets.

Fazzini and Gallagher led Crestwood with 23 and 20 points respectively.

Also helping out on the scoreboard were Luke Casey with 12 points, Robbie Hopkins chipped in with five, and Wasko had three. Brian Markowski and Rojas each finished with two.

Crestwood tuned up for the title game with a crushing 80-44 victory over host Tunkhannock.

Coles Wasko led the way for the Comets with a game-high 24 points. Luke Casey chipped in 15 while Markowski and Gallagher each added 13 points in the balanced scoring attack.

Also for Crestwood, Gallagher with five points , Fazzini, four, Rojas, four and Amosson tossed in two.

Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 basketball title on February 12, cruising to a 74-42 victory over visiting Tunkhannock.

Crestwood led from start to finish outscoring their opponents in the first three quarters.

Rebecca Rutkowski scored her 1,000th career point as she led the lady Comets with a game-high 36 points. Maddie Ritsick tossed in 18.

Also putting points on the board were Ferdinand with eight, Kendra, six, Macko, four and Cronauer, two.
