The Crestwood Middle School Hockey team has continued their run for the championship against some tough competition.
On Dec. 22, 2013, Crestwood faced off against WVW. Once again, it was a tight game with the first period ending 1-1. But that would be the end of the scoring for Crestwood as WVW scored 3 unanswered goals in the second period and 2 unanswered goals in the third period. Abigail Davis had the lone goal for Crestwood. Helmbold had a good night in goal stopping 27 of 33 shots but lacked any offensive support.
Crestwood tried to get back on the winning track against the Susquehanna Stampede on Jan. 15. Crestwood led 3-1 after the first period with goals coming from Courtney Dushanko (assist by Weisenberger), Tyler Shedlock (unassisted) and Weisenberger (assist by Dushanko). The game stayed tight after the second period with Crestwood leading 5-2. Goals were scored by Davis (assist by Sergei Scaramastro) and Kelsey Kulak (assist by David Gugliotti). The scoring went back and forth in the third period with each team scoring four times for a final score of Crestwood -9 and Susquehanna -6. Third period goals were by Gugliotti (unassisted), Tyler Haasis (assist by Shedlock) and Davis’ two unassisted goals. Helmbold stopped 20 of 26 shots on net.
Crestwood once again faced off against Back Mountain on January 19. Once again it was a close game with Crestwood leading 1-0 after the first period with an unassisted goal by Weisenberger. Back Mountain had a slightly better second period with the game being tied at 2-2. Crestwood’s second period goal was scored by Ryan Harding (assisted by Gugliotti) with .5 seconds left. Crestwood ran out of steam in the third period scoring three unanswered goals for a 5-2 win over Crestwood.
On Feb. 2, Crestwood played the WVW Spartans. Crestwood was down 2-1 after the first period with the lone goal coming from Scaramastro (assisted by Weisenberger). The Spartans took over in the second period scoring three unanswered goals. Crestwood hung with the Spartans during the third period with each team scoring twice but eventually lost 7-3. Third period goals scored by Scaramastro (unassisted) and Gugliotti (assisted by Davis). Helmbold stopped 13 of 20 shots on goal.
Crestwood played against Susquehanna on Feb. 9. The game was tight after the first period with Crestwood leading 3-2. Goals were scored by Davis, Dushanko and Gugliotti (unassisted). Crestwood broke open the scoring in the second with six unanswered goals. Scores came from Weisenberger (unassisted), Davis (assisted by Weisenberger), Frank Doherty (assisted by Gugliotti), Gugliotti (assisted by Weisenberger), Gugliotti (assisted by Davis and Weisenberger) and Davis (unassisted). The scoring did not stop in the third period. Both teams combined for seven goals with Crestwood winning 13-5. Third period goals were scored by Haasis, Davis, Weisenberger and Trent Edwards. Helmbold stopped 14 of 19 shots on goal.
The next game is at Revolution Ice Centre on February 22 against Back Mountain. Playoffs begin in March.
