American Lung Assoc. Schedules Wilkes-Barre Arena Climb

The American Lung Association in Pennsylvania will host its sixth annual Wilkes-Barre Arena Climb on Saturday, April 5, 2014, at Mohegan Sun Arena-Casey Plaza, 255 Highland Park Blvd., Wilkes-Barre. Event participants will be timed as they scale 1,224 stairs. The climb will begin at 1 p. m., with registration starting at noon.

The Wilkes-Barre Arena Climb raises awareness of and monetary support for the 35 million Americans who suffer from asthma and other lung diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer. Climb participants can register as individuals or as part of a team. Each participant pays a $25 registration fee and is asked to collect a minimum of $100 in donations. This year, the ALA-PA’s goal is to raise $20,000 for lung disease prevention, research and advocacy programs.

A Firefighters’ Team Challenge and Fitness Center Team Challenge are part of this year’s event. Teams will compete against each other for the fastest cumulative time climbing the 1,224 steps. The firefighter team and fitness center team that raises the most donations will each receive a Traveling Trophy.

Some climbers participate to honor loved ones they have lost to lung disease. The ALA-PA will display photos of these loved ones at the event.

Climb participants will receive commemorative t-shirts and finish line photos. They can also earn prizes for their fundraising efforts. The highest individual fundraiser will win a two-day, one-night stay for two at one of three Cove Haven Resorts.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins are supporting this year’s climb by offering a special American Lung Association Night on April 5, 2014 -the same day as the climb. The Penguins will offer a discounted ticket package that includes a hot dog, popcorn, drink and Penguins hat. A spokesperson will announce the fastest male and fastest female climb participants at the game that evening.
