Crestwood Icemen Claim NEPASHL Championship

The Crestwood Varsity Ice Hockey team beat Pittston Area 4-3 to claim the 2013 –2014 NEPA Scholastic Hockey League Championship at the Revolution Ice Centre in Pittston.

Rich Weinstock from Pittston opened the scoring at 11:53 of the first period and Pittston led 1 to 0 after 1 period. In the second period Crestwood scored two goals ten seconds apart to take the lead. Ryan Kelly from Matt Madry and Damian Feschuk from Drew Bobynskyj lit the lamp. Jerry Scatena from Pittston area tied the game late in the second period and the two teams went to the third period tied at 2. Madry scored two goals for Crestwood (1 from Rich Gawel, and 1 from Bobynskyj) to give the Comets a two goal lead. Despite a late goal from Scatena, the Comets held on for a 4 to 3 victory. Max Kushner made 38 saves in the Crestwood net to earn the victory.

Prior to the Championship game, Crestwood defeated the Paupack Bucks 10-0 in the quarterfinal round. Among the goal scorers were Tom Armstrong, Kelly, Jon Zirnheld, Madry, and Sky Swavely. Assists were handed out by Josh Edwards, Gawal, and Brandon Moran.

In the semi-final round, the Varsity Ice-Men rallied from a 2-goal deficit to beat the Back Mountain Black Hawks 5-4. Scoring goals were Stefan Krupski, Armstrong, Tanner Kahlau, and Kelly. Assisting on the goals were John Stewart, Swavely, and Billy Spear.

The Comets finish the season 14-1-2. Crestwood is coached by Paul Eyerman, Bill Davis, Jim Edwards, and Bo Bobynskyj.
