Each year during Lent, eight denominations share in a very special offering. The One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) offering is gathered by the United Church of Christ, Presbyterian Church (USA), Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Reformed Church in America, Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Church of the Brethren, A. M. E Zion, and American Baptist Church. Coordinated by Church World Service (CWS), these offerings are used to assist those in dire need. When natural or man-made disasters strike, CWS is often the first organization on the scene, joining with local church leaders to provide relief where it is needed most. Organized in 1949 by an informal meeting of separate churches, the concept of a mutual relief effort grew into a unified force showcased by an hour-long radio show including such famous personalities as Gregory Peck and Ida Lupino which aired on Saturday, March 26.
Called “One Great Hour”, the program ended with a plea for listeners to attend their local church the next morning and make a sacrificial contribution. An estimated 75,000 churches participated in that offering on March 27, 1949. What a fantastic demonstration of the original purpose of OGHS as outlined in their joint statement in 1949: This nationwide united effort by America’s Christians has an importance far beyond the practical goal of fund raising. For this great joint program will not only strengthen the vitally important relief and rehabilitation work of the churches overseas, but will also prove to all the world how great is the
power generated when Christians
unite in a common cause. (emphasis
added) Now it is our turn to “unite in a common cause.” Through our contributions to OGHS, we make possible programs for disaster relief, refugee assistance and development aid. These projects are underway in 100 countries, including the United States and Canada. The OGHS theme for this year is “Sharing Brings Joy”. Let’s give to bring joy to others and also to feel the joy that giving brings us. Share your joy.
You are invited to join us on Wednesday evenings during Lent for supper and worship. We share a light meal in the Fellowship Hall at 6:00 pm and then gather at 7:00 pm in the church for service. Whether you can come for supper or not, please gather with us as we worship our God and Savior, reflecting on the amazing gift of salvation offered to each of us.
On Sunday mornings, we start with Sunday School at 9:00 am for group time and then divide up for lessons, games and crafts. After Sunday School, we meet at 10:30 am for Worship Service. On March 30, our greeters will be Carol Duffy and Connie Myers and our liturgist will be Brooke Rinehimer. Come, join us for worship this Sunday.
